Apex EOD vs Intraday drawdown: which suits how you trade
How each drawdown moves, what each costs and the trade-offs.

Key takeaways
- EOD moves once a day. Intraday moves in real time. The EOD threshold follows your highest closing balance. The Intraday threshold follows your highest balance, open profit included.
- Both are enforced in real time. If your balance touches the threshold at any moment, Apex liquidates your positions. The evaluation fails, or the Performance Account (PA) closes.
- Only EOD evaluations have a daily loss limit. It’s $500 to $2,000, by account size. Both types have one in the PA, set by scaling tier.
- Intraday evaluations cost less. They list at $167 to $1,190, against $490 to $2,190 for EOD. The activation fee is lower too, and it isn’t discounted on either type.
- You can’t switch types later. Apex doesn’t change an evaluation’s size or type after checkout, and the PA you activate keeps the same drawdown type.
At a glance
EOD and Intraday drawdown, side by side
Like account size, the drawdown type can’t be changed after checkout. Here’s how each drawdown moves, with Apex’s numbers and a calculator for your own account.
EOD drawdown
- Threshold moves
- Up once a day, at the close. Never down.
- Threshold level
- Your highest closing balance minus the max drawdown
- Enforced
- In real time, open losses included. Each close sets the level for the next session.
- Daily loss limit
- Evaluation: $500 to $2,000, fixed by size. PA: set by scaling tier.
- Stops trailing
- PA: at the starting balance plus $100. Evaluation: at the profit target balance, except on Tradovate.
- Evaluation list price
- $490 to $2,190
- Activation fee
- $109 to $159, not discounted
Intraday trailing drawdown
- Threshold moves
- Up in real time, with each new high. Never down.
- Threshold level
- Your highest balance, open profit included, minus the max drawdown
- Enforced
- In real time, open losses included. It can move up at any moment.
- Daily loss limit
- Evaluation: none. PA: set by scaling tier.
- Stops trailing
- PA: at the starting balance plus $100. Evaluation: at the profit target balance, except on Tradovate.
- Evaluation list price
- $167 to $1,190
- Activation fee
- $89 to $149, not discounted
Both types use the same profit targets and max drawdowns, from a $1,500 target and $1,000 drawdown on a 25K to $9,000 and $4,000 on a 150K. The main difference is how the threshold moves. EOD evaluations also have a daily loss limit and cost more. In the Performance Account, the minimum profit for a qualifying day and the payout caps differ slightly.
EOD drawdown
How the EOD drawdown moves
Apex recalculates the EOD threshold once a day, at the close, from your closing balance. It trails your highest close and never moves down.
That level then holds for the whole next session, and Apex enforces it in real time, open trades included. Touch it at any moment and your positions are liquidated, even if your balance would have recovered by the close.
Four days on a 50K EOD account
The 50K has a $2,000 max drawdown, so the threshold starts at $48,000.
| Day | Balance at the close | Threshold for the next session |
|---|---|---|
| Start | $50,000 | $48,000 |
| Day 1, new high | $50,600 | $48,600 |
| Day 2, down | $50,200 | $48,600, unchanged |
| Day 3, up | $50,450 | $48,600, unchanged |
| Day 4, new high | $51,100 | $49,100 |
Illustration only, not a recommendation. Hypothetical numbers that show how Apex calculates the rule. Not a trading result.
Day 2 closed lower. Day 3 closed higher than Day 2 but still below Day 1, so the threshold stayed at $48,600 both times. Only a new highest close moves it. During any of these sessions, a trade could also run well into profit and come back without moving it.
The daily loss limit in EOD evaluations
EOD evaluations add a daily loss limit: $500 on a 25K up to $2,000 on a 150K. It doesn’t grow as you make profit, and open trades count toward it. If your loss for the session reaches it, Apex liquidates your positions and pauses trading until the next session opens at 6:00 PM ET. The account stays active, and the threshold isn’t affected: the two are separate rules.
EOD doesn’t mean you can hold past the close. On both types, positions must be flat before the market close: 4:59 PM ET for most contracts, earlier for agricultural futures and on CME holiday early-close days.
Intraday drawdown
How the Intraday trailing drawdown moves
The Intraday threshold follows your highest balance in real time, and that high includes open profit. It never moves down, and it doesn’t reset each day.
One trade on a 50K Intraday account
- You start the session at $50,000. The threshold is $48,000.
- A trade runs to $700 of open profit. Your high is now $50,700, so the threshold moves to $48,700 at once, before the trade closes.
- The trade comes all the way back and you exit at break-even. Your balance is $50,000 again, and the threshold stays at $48,700.
Illustration only, not a recommendation. Hypothetical numbers that show how Apex calculates the rule. Not a trading result.
Open profit you give back comes out of your room. You made nothing on the trade, but your room to the threshold has gone from $2,000 to $1,300. On an EOD account, the same day would leave the threshold at $48,000, because the close set no new high. That’s the main argument for EOD.
In return, Intraday evaluations have no daily loss limit. Apex controls their risk through the trailing threshold alone.

Stop levels
When the threshold stops trailing
In a Performance Account, the threshold stops trailing at the starting balance plus $100. In an evaluation, it depends on the platform. The rules are the same for EOD and Intraday.
| Account | Performance Account | Evaluation on Rithmic or WealthCharts |
|---|---|---|
| 25K | $25,100 | $26,500 |
| 50K | $50,100 | $53,000 |
| 100K | $100,100 | $106,000 |
| 150K | $150,100 | $159,000 |
Tradovate evaluations have no stop: the threshold keeps trailing your highest balance.
On Rithmic and WealthCharts, an evaluation’s threshold stops at the profit target balance. In both cases it locks once your high reaches the stop level plus the max drawdown: $52,100 for a 50K PA, or $55,000 for a 50K evaluation. On EOD, the high is your highest close. On Intraday, it’s your highest balance, open profit included.
Calculator
Check your own threshold
Set your account size and stage, then enter your highest and current balances. You’ll see where the threshold sits and how much room is left. It’s rule math, not a forecast.
Drawdown threshold check
EOD accounts: use your highest closing balance. Intraday accounts: use your highest balance including open profit. Leave the balances empty to see the starting threshold.
- Max drawdown threshold
- Room to the threshold
Room left is the distance to the max drawdown only. EOD evaluations and all Performance Accounts also have a daily loss limit that can end your session sooner. Apex enforces the threshold in real time.

Performance Accounts
What differs after you pass
If you pass, you have 7 calendar days to activate a Performance Account of the same size and drawdown type. A PA is a simulated funded account.
The daily loss limit difference goes away in the PA: both types have one, set by a scaling tier that follows your balance at the close. A few payout rules still differ by type.
Minimum profit for a qualifying day
| Account | EOD PA | Intraday PA |
|---|---|---|
| 25K | $100 | $100 |
| 50K | $250 | $200 |
| 100K | $300 | $250 |
| 150K | $350 | $300 |
A day qualifies when its net profit reaches the minimum. You need 5 of them before you can request a payout, and the other payout rules still apply.
Intraday Performance Accounts also have slightly higher payout caps on 50K and up. Our payouts guide has the cap tables.
Accounts are simulated. Futures trading involves substantial risk of loss. Payouts are at Apex’s discretion and depend on its rules. Nothing here is financial advice.
Weighing it up
The trade-offs between EOD and Intraday
Each drawdown gives something up. Which trade-off matters more depends on how you trade.
Questions
EOD and Intraday questions
Can I switch from Intraday to EOD after buying?
No. Apex doesn’t change an evaluation’s size or type after checkout, so trading the other type means buying a new evaluation. If you pass, the Performance Account you activate keeps the drawdown type of the evaluation you passed.
Can my balance dip below the EOD threshold if it recovers by the close?
No. The close only sets the threshold. Apex enforces it in real time, open trades included, so one touch during the session liquidates your positions and fails the evaluation or closes the PA, even if the price comes back.
Does open profit move the Intraday threshold?
Yes. Your highest balance includes unrealized gains, so an open trade that sets a new high raises the threshold at once, even if you never close it. The threshold doesn’t move back down when the trade fades, and it doesn’t reset each day.
Does hitting the daily loss limit fail the account?
No. It ends your trading for the session: Apex liquidates your positions, and you can trade again when the next session opens at 6:00 PM ET. The account stays active. Touching the max drawdown threshold is what fails an evaluation or closes a PA.
Which drawdown type is more forgiving?
It depends on how you trade. An EOD drawdown ignores open profit you give back, which on an Intraday trailing account raises the threshold for good. The trade-off is the daily loss limit in EOD evaluations, and EOD evaluations cost more at every size.
Does the threshold stop trailing on Tradovate?
Not in evaluations. A Tradovate evaluation’s threshold keeps trailing your highest balance with no stop. On Rithmic and WealthCharts, it stops at the profit target balance. In a Performance Account, it stops at the starting balance plus $100.
